Overpopulation is one of the haunting problems of our age (and things can only get worse down the road). As always, to crack difficult problems, you need innovative thinking. Have a look at the following video:

Personally I would love to live in such a space-efficient apartment.... (I 'm sure my wife will strongly disagree though ;-))

This reminds me of the Fifth element (the movie). This concept is extremely powerful also for making home more efficient - small spaces means less power to heat/cool. I would imagine skyscrapers made out of these small apartments... that would be amazing!
